dressed up like a lady: "I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters..."

"I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters..."

You may have noticed that I seem to have a strange affection for early 80's summer fashion. The truth is I'm just sort of generally obsessed with the entire aesthetic of the early 80's, which is odd, because I was born in 1981 and wasn't alive, or at least wasn't conscious of my surroundings for virtually the entire period.

Anyway, a movie that captures this style perfectly is actually a parody of 80's summer camp flicks called Wet Hot American Summer that was released in 2001. It doesn't hurt that I love everything about this batshit crazy film, and I can't resist recommending it even though it's far from a universally loved comedy (if you don't enjoy humor based alternately on hysteric, nonsensical madness and on deeply self-aware irony, it's probably best to stay away) but I could watch this movie over and over just for the tube socks and boys wearing shorty shorts with white piping.

The woman who plays the female lead is an actress named Marguerite Moreau. You may remember her from such classic works of cinema as the Mighty Ducks. She never really became an A-list actress, but I just adore her -- she's absolutely gorgeous and, in WHAS, she does a great job of keeping a straight face while everybody else is acting completely insane. Anyway, I recently happened to find a top that looked just like the one she wears for most of the movie sitting on the clearance rack at Target, so with my shorts about to be stored away for the season, I thought I'd recreate the whole look.

  9. This looks likes a movie I might have accidentally watched whilst it was on Channel 5 or something (UK channel that is notoriously cheesy/bad....).....but I like the resulting outfit....
