dressed up like a lady: Wedding Dress Inspiration

Wedding Dress Inspiration

I'm about to have my first fitting for my wedding dress -- how crazy is that? An awesome designer and dressmaker is creating my gown for me, since I know EXACTLY what I want. You'll see the real thing in due time, but I thought it might be fun to run down the sources of wedding dress inspiration that have excited the future bride in me over the years.

In roughly autobiographical order:

The Gown Worn by: Stephanie Seymour
In: the video for Guns'n'Roses' "November Rain"

Claimed THIS IS MY DRESS: In fifth grade

Nothing says classy like a Carmela Sutera gown cut to mini length in the front to show off your gams. Even at 10, I was tickled by the thought of askewing stuffy traditions and conservative expectations, even if that meant getting married in the middle of the desert where Slash can play a solo, and then apparently dying because it rained at your wedding reception (?).

The Wedding Outfit Worn by: Cameron Diaz

Claimed THIS IS MY DRESS: In high school

Cameron Diaz is introduced in Danny Boyle's 1997 romantic action comedy by swimming across a pool, climbing onto a patio, picking up a revolver, and using it to shoot an apple off her butler's head. The slick badassery of her 70's inspired white wedding suit felt equally awesome to me when I was a teenager -- though Ewan McGregor in a leather jacket and kilt didn't hurt.

The Gown Worn by: Gwen Stefani
In: the video for No Doubt's "Simple Kind of Life"

Claimed THIS IS MY DRESS: In college

Moving the source of bridal rebellion from the thigh region to the tummy region, this John Galliano inspired two-piece gown was my dress of choice in college. If I'd been so dumb as to tie the knot in my early 20's, at least I would have shown off my abs while doing it.

The Dress Worn by: Audrey Hepburn
Claimed THIS IS MY DRESS: From the womb, right?

Any girl with an ounce of personal style has loved and should love the perfect little Givenchy dress from Funny Face. Oddly, the thing I love most about it is that drop waist -- because it makes a lady with my kind of MASSIVE hip-waist-bust differential look like BOOM! However, Audrey for all of her graces, was not exactly an hourglass gal. I guess the woman just looked great in everything.

The Wedding Suit Worn by: Sharon Stone
In: Casino

Claimed THIS IS MY DRESS: Always.

Casino is among the most underrated films of all time, and not just because it features Sharon Stone getting married in a perfect little mod mini-dress and matching bolero. Scenes from this gangster epic can be pretty bleak -- the whole second act is an allegory about the fall of man, and a harsh look at the apparently poor, cocaine fueled choices of mafiosos in the 80's. But Stone's cropped headband veil pretty much gets me through the toughest moments, including sex scenes with Joe Pesci, and tearful phone calls to James Woods.

Wish me luck at my fitting. Details to follow. Have a great weekend. :)

  3. I'm looking at you right now. I'm seeing you for the very first time right this minute. I'm seeing you and I can feel my heart click. I see you fourteen years old. I see the first second i ever saw you. I see you long-legged little colt, stupid braces on your teeth. Every time I ever see you, that's what I see.

  4. This is such a great post!! I also claimed that the Stephanie Seymour wedding dress was MY dress. The November Rain video had such a huge impact on the teenager that I was. Thanks for the memories!

  6. Some amazing inspiration! If only I could ever pull off Audrey's dress. & Sharon's headband veil in Casino is just awesome!

  7. I love this. I've honestly never given much thought to what I'd want to wear when/if I get married other than I don't want white or cream (because those colors don't look good on me).

  9. I say you get a version of each dress and rotate through them over the course of the wedding day/night. Seriously though, you would kick Aubrey's tiny little ass in a "Who wore it better?" challenge in that dress from Funny Face. I can't wait to see the dress you've selected for yourself; my expectations are very high.

  10. FYI, the November Rain vid/song was loosely based on a short story by Axl's friend Del James. (was no wedding in the story) The bride doesn't die because it rained at her wedding, the actual girlfriend in the story commits suicide by blowing her head off (look closely in the casket, there is a mirror covering half her face reflecting back to give the 'illusion' (lol) of a whole head.) Stunning dress in 1992 for a supermodel to wear, complete with the 'rumour' that Axl substituted a real priest on the day and they actually got married, NOT TRUE,lol.

    1. I DID notice the mirror, and always wondered about that! Thanks for the insight. This makes me want to track down and read the story, though I have a feeling it might not be as awesome as the ambiguously bonkers music vid that was based on it. ;D

P.S.: If it weren't for the constraints of the format of this post, I totally would have mentioned that Stephanie also gets to wear a particularly stunning black bodycon cocktail dress at that semi-disasterous reception as well. That vid is so full of hot style.
