I've never loved a rock band the way that I love Queen -- and I've loved Queen as long as I've been listening to music. I started singing probably in the womb, but the first voice that ever inspired me to really sing, to aspire to power and hugeness and ecstatic precision in my own timber and practice every day to strengthen my vocal muscles...well that would have to be Freddie effing Mercury.
Consequently, I've been singing only Freddie's part to Under Pressure -- Queen's epic duet with David Bowie -- since I was nine. Freddie has always felt like my own personal, vocal avatar, but I didn't have anybody to sing Bowie's part. Until now. :)
Our beloved Tim rocked the guitar through 'Under Pressure' and he and the guys were so awesomely locked in that he ended up taking on our rhythm section, Mike and Chad, when he plays live with Timothy Monger State Park! After that, Robert came up on stage. He'd been playing with his other band on the other side of the country the night before, and caught a red eye flight home just to be there with us. Because in addition to being a superhero surgeon on that axe, he's also a wonderful human being.
So since we officially had all the Canastas on stage, we played a full set of rocking old school R&B and rockabilly and everybody danced. It was freaking beautiful. :)
I'm so happy that this picture exists. This is a moment when Gbear actually came up, hugged my leg, and and asked me to pleeeeeease sing another song. She never quit dancing that night, even when she looked completely exhausted. Girl was not interested in any grandparents' laps if she had a spot on the dance floor. :)
