dressed up like a lady: DiY Cropped Sweater

DiY Cropped Sweater

Winter keeps raging.

Fuck it, I'm cropping a wool sweater.

Sweater: Thrifted
Skinnies: Vero Moda
Ankle Boots: Steve Madden

Yeah, it's frigid out and I'm removing coverage from my clothing. Fuck me, right?

Asos and Nasty Gal both have plenty of cropped sweaters in stock, but I can't bring myself to pay retail prices for the privelege of letting someone else shorten a 100% acrylic sweater for me. This one's thrifted, made in the USA, and all wool. It's also, consequently, very warm, even as it exposes a strip of midriff.

I would have photographed the DiY procedure if it had been graceful or photogenic in any way, but it was crazy simple. All I did was try it on to decide where I wanted to crop it, marked it appropriately, and sewed a seam along those lines with a zig-zag stitch on my sewing machine. Then I cut off the excess. No custom stitch widths or special thread or anything, but I did take care to not stretch the fabric out as I fed it into the machine -- doing that would make the hem even rufflier than it already is.

I can't really take any kind of credit for this idea. I've wanted to crop a heavy sweater forever, based on this sweet picture of Molly Ringwald.

P.S. I got a haircut. Super short bob with an undercut. Have to admit, I kind of love it!

  1. You and your navel are incredibly brave, haha.

I love how often I see these ridiculous sweaters in thrift stores and I think that there's nothing anyone could do to make them cute, and then like a week later you'll post something like this, looking awesome, and prove me unbearably wrong. Well... damn.

  2. As A always says, as like this should be shared with the world.

I'm a fan of your new do. It suits you well.

    1. Not sure if this "as" is missing a 'b' or an extra 's'. Amanda is a firecracker, so either is possible.

    2. Drat! I meant "abs"! Honest!

    3. My quote was "Abs" but I am not above saying the other thing lol.

  3. Perfect crop ~ love the Ringwald reference!
And loved your anecdote about the white shift and go-go boots even more... You were always a fashion plate (and an amazing debater, apparently!)!

    1. Thanks, Carrie! Molly really wore some amazing stuff when she wasn't hacking up perfectly good prom dresses. ;)

  4. Haircut rocks. Sweater revamping rocks. This whole look rocks! :)

I was bobbing one of my sweaters this past weekend, too - well, faux bobbing at least, as tucking the ends under and up was all it took to make a 21st knit look strikingly 30s/50s. Got to love that! :)

    1. Thanks, Jessica! It's so cool how you can change the whole vibe of a look with a simple tuck! Of course, I would trust you to figure that out. I, on the other hand, would probably overthink it and try to do something horrid with safety pins and scotch tape. ;)

Leave a comment. It's good for our relationship.
