dressed up like a lady: The Kitchen of our Discontent

The Kitchen of our Discontent

Last week, MC and I found a mouse in our cupboard. Well, Chi found the mouse. I trapped him in a plastic container and took him to a small woods nearby. I also praised Chi for his mousing abilities, even if I'm too compassionate to watch him beat a rodent to death. He always gets bored halfway through anyway.

Mammals tend to shit when they're scared and Chi would scare anyone. So we had to clean out the cupboard with bleach.

Once the cupboards were empty and clean, we thought "Why not paint them?" So we took off the doors and started painting.

Once they were being painted we thought "Why not knock out this tile we're not crazy about with a hammer, rehang new backing board, and put up new tile?"

Smashcut to MC and I giddily spending the daylight hours of our staycation last week chiseling plaster down to the lath, making endless trips to the hardware store, buying, transporting, cutting, and hanging big ass sheets of cement composite backer board, whittling edges to fit the inexact spaces of our historic house, continually shop-vacing all the dust, and finally, mixing and spreading thinset mortar and fiberglass tape into all the joints. We sanded them last night so it's finally ready for tile.

Oh, and in the middle of all this, my dad and his best friend, who's a contractor, came over to replumb and rewire everything under the sink (way above our paygrade), install my mom's old dishwasher (which is nice, and most importantly, works), install a new disposal, and install a sprayer in place of a spigot for a defunct water filter. Then, of course, my dad's friend wouldn't accept any money after 12 hours of work.

We're lucky bastards, right? Lucky for the help of friends and family, for working appliances, and honestly, I'm just as lucky to have a partner I can do all this with who shares a sense of enthusiasm about it. We share the same taste, we work well as a team, and we both have the sense of humor to laugh it off when shit goes sideways. After this much hard work in that kitchen, I can tell you how priceless that is. I'd have strangled a lesser man by now.

Anyway, that's what's going on over here. Our general inspiration is the kitchen from Moonstruck. I'll take some pics when there's more to see.

  1. can't wait for the pictures! I like when people renovate their homes themselves. It shows their character and somehow is more appealing (most of times) then something bought and paid in the store.

  3. hahah I love how that little mouse started this big project! but I'm so happy for you and your partner for working in such an amazing project, your kitchen is not going to look ten times better but it is going to feel special because of all the work you both put on it. My husband and I wanted to add a back splash to our kitchen this summer, a pretty small project that then became painting cabinets, new floors, new zink and new counter tops.... we worked our butts off but our kitchen looks amazing and we love it :) Thanks for sharing such a cute adventure!
    XOXO
